about

201 and 203 are both named after the practice rooms they were written in, and were composed with my close friend and musical partner, Xavier Lecouturier.

Neo was inspired by some of my favorite neo-soul artists, including George Duke, Moonchild, Robert Glasper and Stevie Wonder.

Song for E is written for and dedicated to my wonderful girlfriend, Ellie Ulrich. I can’t thank her enough for her emotional support as well as being my number one fan.

9/8 is another song I wrote with Xavier, who came up with a large portion of the groove and chord changes. The melody, played by Santosh Sharma and Martin Budde, was surprisingly recorded in one take despite the rhythmic difficulty.

Just Chillin’ - This is the newest version of this song that we recorded at David Lange Studios.

All Lit Up is a funky little interlude that Xavier wrote for this record. He’s featured on this track playing guitar and drums.

Trio Mood One was written at the end of a recording session when Santosh wanted to write and record a quick tune before we left. We didn’t have time to write a melody, so we just improvised over the whole thing.

Song for D is dedicated to my first piano teacher at Cornish College of the Arts, Dawn Clement. When Dawn was living in Seattle, I’d go see her perform every chance I could, and listening to her rendition of Brad Shepik’s “Sugar Cliff” inspired me to write a song for her with a similar harmonic minor sound.

What The Funk started from a line that Martin wrote, and we ended up spending the rest of the day writing a song based on it. This was one of the first tunes that sparked the initial idea to form the electric band.

Xavier came up with the original groove for Poinciana as well as the first two chord changes. He played a melodic phrase that sounded like the opening motif of the original jazz standard Poinciana, so I decided to make a reharmonized arrangement. There are elements of the Ahmad Jamal version in this song, such as doubled piano and bass lines, as well as hints of the original Poinciana groove.

Epic is based on a triadic ostinato figure that I heard Martin play, and then I started writing the melody to this song on my own. It wasn’t until Martin visited me at my home in Fairfax, California that we decided to finish this entire song in one day. Martin only had two hours of sleep the night before, but we were determined to finish the song.

Just Chillin’ (alternate take) was written by Santosh and I. We wrote this entire song in the studio on the day of our recording session.

It’s Been A Minute is a song Xavier wrote in fifteen minutes, and in order to be able to play it at an upcoming gig, he had me hand-write a chart for it right before we went on.

Nellie’s was written in honor of Nellie Cornish, founder of Cornish College of the Arts, and was composed in her old room in Kerry Hall which overlooks the Space Needle. Nellie founded the school in 1914, starting with the music department, and if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have moved to Seattle and met a majority of the musicians on this record.

Thank you!
